Conditions for participation in the ICRS 2021/2022 photo competition: "Colourful diversity, white death - what colours can tell us about coral reefs?"

1. Participant

All persons are eligible to participate. Persons under the age of 18 must have the consent of their legal guardian.


2. Execution and settlement

2.1 Each participant may submit a maximum of three pictures. The image size must be at least 3,000 x 4,000 pixels, JPEG image format. Entries should be sent to the following e-mail address:

The deadline for submitting photos is 29 February 2022.

2.2 Participation is only possible by sending an e-mail. Contributions sent by other means are not accepted and will not be returned.

2.3 E-mail addresses and other data will only be stored for the purpose of the photo competition and will be deleted after the competition and the planned exhibitions have expired. The participants agree to the use and storage of their data solely for the purposes of this photo competition.

2.4 The submitted pictures will be deleted after the end of the competition and the planned exhibitions as well as after the reporting.

2.5 The winners will be notified in writing by post and/or e-mail by the ICRS 2021/2022 Organising Committee and their names will be published on the ICRS 2021/2022 website. The winner expressly agrees to this form of publication. 

2.6 The pictures selected by the jury of the competition will be presented to the public in the exhibition "Colourful diversity, white death - what colours can tell us about coral reefs?" In 2022 the exhibition will be shown in July 2022 at the Haus der Wissenschaften in Bremen. Further exhibition venues are planned.

2.7 There is no entitlement to participation in the planned exhibition and publication or to any of the prizes.


3. Granting of rights

3.1 Each participant grants the ICRS 2021/2022 the non-exclusive right to use the submitted images for the exhibition "Colourful diversity, white death - what colours can tell us about coral reefs?"  The rights of use include the right to exhibit the pictures in the context of this exhibition, also several times if the exhibition is moving, the right to process the submitted pictures for the exhibition, reporting on the exhibition (regardless of which media, i.e. print, online and social media portals such as Facebook), public relations for the exhibitions, such as exhibition posters, invitations, exhibitions, e-cards and possibly the production of catalogues. 

3.2 The ICRS 2021/2022 adds the copyright line with the name of the author to the metadata of all selected images, but cannot accept any liability for the publication of the copyright line in the event of publication, in particular by third parties, such as in the case of reporting on the exhibition.

3.3 In April 2022, we will send all participants whose images have been selected for the planned exhibition project a contract for the transfer of the rights of use cited here as an example. Until the contract has been signed, each participant is free to withdraw from participation by sending a revocation to . 


The participant affirms that he or she holds all rights to the submitted picture, that he or she has unrestricted exploitation rights to all parts of the picture, that the picture is free of third-party rights and that no personal rights are infringed in the representation of persons. If one or more persons are recognizably depicted on the picture, the persons concerned must agree to the picture being published. The participant will confirm the above in writing upon request. Should third parties nevertheless assert claims for infringement of their rights, the participant shall indemnify the organiser against all claims.


5. Liability 

The ICRS 2021/2022 accepts no liability for the loss or possible damage of the submitted images.


6. Data protection/privacy

6.1 The privacy policy can be found here.

6.2 The data submitted by the participants will be passed on to participating third parties, such as magazine editors or exhibition organisers, if the pictures are published as part of the photo competition (reporting, awarding of prizes, etc.). The participant expressly agrees to this. 


7. Appeal

Legal recourse is excluded.
